Importance of ID Cards

Applying for a state ID card is a similar to the process of getting a driver license, minus all of the actual testing. The card is a great idea for those with no intent to drive in the state of Colorado or to obtain a driver license, and who do not own any other type of significant photo ID.

It is vital to have some form of legal photo document on your person almost all the time, and in case you run into an emergency it will make notifying relatives that much easier. Besides, you will quickly realize the limitations of not having some sort of photo identification: trouble boarding aircraft, writing checks, buying alcohol or hitting the clubs, or using a credit card. Plus, the ID is an affordable alternative to a driver license.

Note : You cannot hold both a driver license and ID card.

ID Requirements

Bring two forms of ID from Colorado's acceptable document list to a driver license office. The state is looking for proof of age, lawful presence, and proof of name. You will also need to supply your Social Security number, although this does not have to be listed on the final document.

For an applicant who is under 18, a parent or guardian must appear with you to sign the affidavit of age and must also provide identification and proof that he or she is indeed the minor's legal parent or guardian.

The fee is $10.50. If you are more than 60 years old, the card is free of charge.

ID cards issued to those under 21 years of age expire on the holder's 21st birthday. Otherwise, all cards are valid for five years.

Renewing an ID Card

If you are an ID card holder under the age of 21, your Colorado ID card will expire on your 21st birthday. If you are over the age of 21, your ID card will expire on your birthday, every five years. The fee for renewal is $10.50, until you reach the age of 60. After that, renewals are free.

All Colorado ID card renewals must be completed in person at your local Colorado Department of Revenue Driver's License office.

Replacing an ID Card

You may replace a lost or stolen card by taking one approved identification document to a driver license office. The replacement card costs $10.50 if you're younger than 60 years old, but it's free if you're 60 or older.
