Renewing Your License

How to Renew
Renewing a regular or basic Colorado driver license can be accomplished by two methods and, unfortunately, the Internet is still not one of those means. The options are to renew in person or by mail.
The fee is $21 for adults age 21 to 60, and the license is valid for five years.
Renewing in Person
Renewing a basic license the old-fashioned way by going to a driver license office still has its benefits especially if you are looking to upgrade the mug shot on your current license.
The least busy times, generally, are Wednesdays and Thursdays. If at all possible, you should try to steer clear of Mondays and Fridays, as those are the days you can expect the dreaded mile-long waits.
Renewing By Mail
If you are between the ages 21 and 61 and possess a spiffy driving record, you have the opportunity of renewing a basic license via mail. You can check your eligibility and print out a renew-by-mail form or request one be mailed to you from the online system. Generally an application will be mailed to your current address automatically every other renew cycle.
Note: You are not eligible for renew-by-mail services and must appear in person if you are:
- Over the age of 61
- Under the age of 21
- Renewing a commercial driver license (CDL)
- Wanting to replace your license portrait and fingerprint
Military Personnel
Each state’s motor vehicle agency will have different renewal policies for drivers in the military. Please proceed to our Drivers in the Military page to find out how to handle your license renewal while you are stationed out of state.
